That being said, your book is so ridiculously well written. It’s literary to me. How do you define what’s literary, anyway? It’s funny, I’m not really sure, either. I never really realized I was writing romance, but my novels all have a strong central love story with a happy ending, and that meets the parameters of the genre! The publishing industry defines literary books as being primarily character-driven, as opposed to plot, but so many genre novels have brilliant characterizations. Audre, my protagonist’s 12-year-old daughter. She’s precocious and wise beyond her years, and often she’s smarter than every grown-up in the room. It was so much fun to write her, primarily because she was based on my own precious tween. I loved writing the dialogue between Eva and Audre, because I took so much from my real-life single-mom experiences with my daughter. Can we talk about writing sex? So many people, I think, don’t go there because it is terribly hard to do well. How do you approach it? And what are the best sex scenes you’ve read?

Eva has the chance to adapt her vampire-romance series into a film but gets the soul-crushing advice that the characters should be made white, because it would be more marketable. I’ve never been asked to turn any of my characters white, but I’ve had friends in the fantasy and sci-fi genres who’ve been asked to whitewash their characters, because apparently asking audiences to believe in a fantasy character who isn’t white is a bridge too far. I have been asked to add more white characters to my books or to give a protagonist a “Black struggle” subplot. Both were a hard no, because it’s clear that those edits were to make my stories feel safer for white audiences. I guarantee you that no white author is ever asked to make their work more palatable for me!

My favorite Black love moment of the past 30 years is Love Jones. If I can write anything that delicious, organic, sexy, funny, and aspirational, I’d die happy. Your protagonist, Eva, is a vampire-romance novelist who writes popular fiction, in contrast to Shane, who is a lauded, literary Colson Whitehead type. Have you felt, whether now or in the past, the feeling of being devalued or put into a certain “chick lit” or romance box? Yes! That was definitely art imitating life. In the literary world, being classified as a romance or chick lit writer automatically puts you at a disadvantage in that people think you’re less serious, less skilled, or less talented than literary writers. And it’s because the majority of the readership is women. Historically, things that women like are deemed silly. Critics thought the Beatles were silly at first because of their fan base. Then, boys discovered them, and they became very important. It’s ludicrous! I think that one of the hardest things to do is to communicate an authentic love story without it coming across as cheesy, unconvincing, formulaic, or, even worse, boring. It’s a real skill.
