In the thick of lockdown in 2020, the country met Amanda Kloots, a fitness instructor and former Broadway dancer. Every day on Instagram, Kloots shared an experience that was rippling across a country being ravaged by the pandemic: Her 41-year-old husband, Tony-nominated Broadway actor Nick Cordero, was hospitalized and on a ventilator in Los Angeles, battling severe complications from COVID-19. Kloots led followers in singing to one of Cordero’s original songs, “Live Your Life,” and displayed relentless positivity, but their experience struck a chord. Kloots and Cordero were the young parents of a baby son, Elvis, and Cordero’s illness was harrowing proof that the virus did not discriminate.

When Cordero died in July 2020, people across the country grieved with Kloots, who shared her experience in a New York Times best-selling memoir released in June 2021, aptly titled Live Your Life: My Story of Loving and Losing Nick Cordero. Co-written with her sister, writer Anna Kloots, the memoir—one of my favorites of the year—covers not just the wrenching details of Cordero’s illness and death and the beauty of the couple’s connection, but the realities of their entertainment-industry marriage, including dating on and off and later clashing over Cordero’s determination to move from Kloots’s beloved New York to Los Angeles. Vogue spoke with Kloots about writing through grief and trauma, sharing an honest portrait of marriage, joining The Talk and Dancing With the Stars, and honoring her late husband the best way she knows how.

Once SDIJ became a bestseller, your earlier book, The Perfect Find, got a glossier cover and a rerelease. Does it have anything to do with publishing finally, belatedly, waking up a little more to Black and BIPOC authors? The publishing industry starting to wake up has a lot to do with it. But The Perfect Find also got a glossy cover do-over to coincide with the movie version, coming to Netflix in the spring! It’s starring Gabrielle Union, and I’m still pinching myself. Speaking of which: the thrilling TV adaptation of SDIJ. What’s the latest? How involved will you be, and do you have dream casting thoughts for Eva and Shane? I’m going to be one of the executive producers. We’re in very early stages of production, so nothing to share yet, but I couldn’t be more excited to help bring this book to the screen.
